Top 10 Webcomics for Total Geeks

For Geeks

cartoon

I know that webcomics can be a touchy subject. You’ll probably wonder why I haven’t mentioned that comic or why in hell is this comic made the top 10, and that’s fine. I can’t possibly know all webcomics and there is a LOT out there and for every taste. Personally, I prefer some originality in scripts and art, while others will only look at the script or the drawing. Or the “funny factor” will be more important for some.

So, if you have a different opinion about this top ten, or if I forgot a nice webcomic, it’s OK, just let me know in the comments and I’ll be happy to include your suggestion in this post as an update or in a subsequent post.

One last note for bloggers : If you would like to win a $2000 identity design prize, you can submit one of your posts to the “Group Writing Project” at problogger.net. The subject of this “group writing” is posts with a “killer title”.

Happy reading !

#10 Dork Tower

What is it ?

Dork Tower tells the story of a group of geeks living in the imaginary town of Mud Bay, Wisconsin. This webcomic is displayed on GameSpy, Pyramid online, Dragon Magazine and some other publications.

Why is it for geeks ?

Well, first it’s called Dork Tower… Second, the topics of this webcomic include role playing games, comic books and video games. If you don’t like any of those, then you’re probably not a geek !

#9 Looking for Group

What is it ?

LFG is a continuous story, so you need to start from the beginning to understand it. It tells the story of Cale’Anon (an elf), Richard (undead warlock) and some of their friends. The story takes place in a fantasy world.

Why is it for geeks ?

Well, first it has this “fantasy” look : it’s like a mix between World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings. Also, this webcomic was in fact originally intended as a parody of WoW !

#8 Penny Arcade

What is it ?

Penny Arcade, like it’s name suggests, is a webcomic with video games as it’s main subject. It features the two authors’ alter egos, Tycho Brahe and John Gabriel.

Why is it for geeks ?

Well, it talks a lot about video games but there is also strips about Star Wars, God or Tolkien’s books. It’s one of the webcomic that you can see often hitting the home page of Digg.

#7 VGCats

What is it ?

VG stands for Video Games, and Cats well… for cats, those furry little animals that I hope you all know. So, it’s two anthropomorphic cats (cats with human characteristics, thanks wikipedia) that often play the roles of other video game characters that they are laughing about in the comic strip.

Why is it for geeks ?

Well, VG stands for Video Games… So it’s another webcomic with video games as it’s main subject. And video games = geeks, right ?

#6 CTRL+ALT+DEL

What is it ?

This comic looks a lot like penny arcade for the drawing style and the subject (video games of course) but lately there is more “every day” situations, like when Ethan’s girlfriend miscarried, for example.

Why is it for geeks ?

Well, there are a lot of references to video games and some to Star Wars too. Some “simple” life moments of a growing geek and other funny “random” situations.

#5 Sinfest

What is it ?

Sinfest is a mix between manga art and western writing. The subjects of this webcomic are more about life, existence and human nature than the other comics in this top #10, but it’s still pretty good.

Why is it for geeks ?

Some references to Star Wars, problems with girls situations (and here too) and also some strips with God and others with the Devil.

#4 SNAFU

What is it ?

It’s a webcomic about two characters, Dave and Travis, that are spending most of their free time playing video games and talking about it. It also contains other “random” strips (again about video games) with “real” characters.

Why is it for geeks ?

This comic has this “anime look” and it has references to The Lord of the Rings, Video games (mostly) (and there), movies and even movies and video games mixed together (that one was tough!).

#3 XKCD

XKCD webomic

What is it ?

If you’re looking at social media websites like Digg, Reddit and others, you’ve seen this comic at least one time. It’s a bunch of stickmen talking to each others about geeky subjects. By the way, XKCD stands for Xenu King of the Citadel of Destiny… just kidding, it doesn’t have any significations.

Why is it for geeks ?

In XKCD, there is references to Google and Google map, problems that geeks faces some day in their life (and this one too), Linux, Wikipedia, mathematics and scientific stuff. By the way, the author, Randall Munroe, is a contractor for the NASA, so it can’t be a “non geeky” comic !

#2 We the Robots

We the robots webcomic

What is it ?

This webcomic depict the life of robots in human like situations in a fictitious world. They are working, having baby robots and friends. As for the title, it’s “WE THE ROBOT” as in “WE THE PEOPLE…” from the preamble to the United States Constitution (as stated in the “About me” page). I know that this comic is not that popular, for example compared to penny-arcade, but for me it was a really great discovery and I’m now a big fan! I hope you’ll like it as much as I do.

Why is it for geeks ?

Those are talking robots… If it isn’t for geeks, I don’t know what it is. And there is also “Dilbert like” situations at work in this comic and also funny and original stuff. Some of the strips also reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes in some way, one of my favorite comic. Anyway, those robots are even working in front of computers and using computers to browse the Internet… yes I know, that sounds weird for robots, but that’s still really funny (and geeky) !

#1 Dilbert

What is it ?

Seriously, I think that 99% of the people that have Internet knows what this comic is. Dilbert is the name of the main character that works as an engineer in a big technology company, where most of the strips take place.
Why is it for geeks ?
It’s the classic of the classic for the nerds. If you work in front of computers all day (like me), it’s impossible that you don’t see any resemblance in those strip when you compare that with your workplace ! I just don’t get his tie tough…

Hi, I found this list via ProBlogger. I love web comics and find them a great way to waste a few spare minutes of the day! CTRL ALT & DEL is pretty good but Dilbert is the king. I’ve read and enjoyed it for years.

How come you don’t have Explsom (http://www.explosm.net/)? Out of the list, however, I like XKCD the best. 2nd is of course Dilbert. Then CTRL ALT & DEL.

  4. mrmuggles Says:

@John Explsom is’nt in my “webcomic taste”, it’s just that :P Thanks for the suggestion though :D

  5. Bronson Says:

Sweet list, and you’re absolutely right - it’s improbable that you’ll know every web comic out there, but fortunately for us it means we’re spoilt for choice.

I discovered a few new ones that I am going to be checking out right now.

    Thanks.

  6. mrmuggles Says:

@Bronson : Thank you for the great comment! :)

  7. SpyderMan Says:

Great list… I am a regular reader and avid fan of Penny Arcade and XKCD (although I think XKCD deserves to be higher on a list for COMPLETE GEEKS… Dilbert is still more mainstream). I hadn’t seen LFG or Dork Tower and I think I may follow them now, as well.

As far as other geek comics go, http://indexed.blogspot.com is also a great one. She takes everyday issues and illustrates them with line graphs, bar charts, and venn diagrams. Not as geeky as some of the above but funny nonetheless.

Great blog, btw… I’ll be followin’ ya.

  8. mrmuggles Says:

@SpyderMan Thanks for the comment! Yes, I’ve seen this blog before. Some of his (her?) diagrams were published in social websites like digg or reddit. Pretty funny stuff! :)

  9. Daniel Says:

I have to admit that I love We the Robots.

It’s fun, witty, and and generally terrific. I’m fully addicted to this one, for sure.
