For Geeks

Introduction

Are you going to have some free time this week? Don’t worry! I found you some geek projects that will, hopefully, waste your valuable time! If you know any other great (or not) geek projects, please share them in the comments so we can all procrastinate a lot more!

Make a Duct Tape Wallet

Your 10 years old wallet doesn’t look good anymore? When you open it, you lose some of your spare change? Don’t worry, I have the perfect solution: The Duct Tape Wallet! There are plenty of ways to make those kind of wallets, some are just ugly and others well… not too repulsive.

Instructions on how to make a duct tape wallet can be found at DuctTapeGuys.com. By the way, about the duct tape rose there… well, don’t think about offering this to a girl, please! Except, of course, if you don’t want to see her again!

You can also read about how to make that project at Instructables.com or on WikiHow.

And for girls, I found, just for you, that pink duct tape wallet (hey it doesn’t look that crappy!) :

Make a Geeky Stop Motion Movie

There’s a lot of objects that you can use to make a geeky stop motion movie. You can use Lego, Transformers, GI-Joe, clay (of course) and any kind of geek objects… Here are some stop motion movies I found on YouTube :

Transformers Stop Motion

Hey, you don’t even have to take objects… just your body will do the trick:

Make Something with Lego

I already made a post about Lego that could give you some great ideas. Here’s a couple more you can use :

Make a Geek Movie

What’s a geek movie? Well, it’s hard to explain like this, but you’ll certainly know when you’ll see one. Some ideas could be a movie about star wars, star trek, a tutorial on how to speak Klingon (that one would be more than geeky). Here is an example on what a geek movie could look like:

A Real Geek (And Crappy) Movie!

By the way, geek movies doesn’t have to look that crappy. I mean, there is certainly geek movies or clip that looks good or at least are funny… you know, like the popular Numa Numa clip:

A Funny Geek Movie

OK, it looks crappy too, but it’s funny at least! Anyway, if you know any geek movie that doesn’t look repulsive, notify me in the comments because I can’t find one! ;)

Finish Your Old Rubik’s Cube

You never solved it. It’s just lying in a drawer, probably still laughing at you since a couple of years. I’m talking about your Rubik’s cube, of course! You know what? You can solve it. And do you want to hear a secret? It’s easy to do!

In fact, there is a lot of strategies to solve that little cube and some are easier than others. You probably won’t beat the world records for the fastest Rubik’s cube solved after your first try, but it can take less than half an hour to finish it for the first time with easy techniques.

The first thing you’ll want to do is to do it with basic instructions first. Then just learn the moves by heart. After a while, you’ll be able to do it easily. Then, you could just find other techniques to do it even faster!

Here are 3 websites showing the technique for beginners. There will certainly be one that you’ll be able to use to finally solve that cube!

And some instructions found on YouTube:

The easy way to solve a Rubik’s Cube - take off all the stickers and put them back on in such a way as it’s solved :)

However, I have to commend your “Tony vs. Paul” find. It was very impressive and well made :)

Case of boring weekend? I think when I started blog I frofeited my spare time - it can eat any amount of it.

So want to waste spare time - start a blog. :)

The how to solve a Rubik’s cube vids look interesting. I’ll have to look at those later when I remember to do so. The duct tape wallet is the other interesting thing - looks unique.

I lost my Rubik’s cube. And I threw away my legos from when I was a kid. However, making a movie doesn’t sound that bad…

@TheChrisD : Sure, but you can’t look like a genius using that trick: Hey look, I can solve that Rubik’s cube in 2 minutes. Close your eyes now!

@Rarst : You’re right! Having a blog is a lot of work! More than you can imagine before you have one.

@John : If you never solved a Rubik’s cube, you’ll see that it’s really easy! And learning just 4-5 moves by heart is enough to finish one without any instruction.

    @Kikolani : Don’t worry, you’re a nice geek! We’re all geeks in some way, anyway :P

@ AdjustantReflex : Buy a new Rubik’s cube and Lego then! And hum… make a Rubik’s cube in Lego. Yea that could do a great stop motion movie! A Lego Rubik’s cube solving itself. If I had free time!

  7. AdjustantReflex Says:

A Rubik’s cube in lego? I’ve never thought of that. But with the economy in the U.S the way it is, I don’t want to spend money on all those legos.

  8. Mitch Says:

The funny thing about this post is that many years ago, back in the 80’s, I had learned how to actually do the Rubik’s cube, then practiced to get my time down in solving it. I got under 90 seconds, barely, then moved on to other things. Who’d have known that, not only would it make a comeback, but that there would be big money contests in doing it? Heck! :-)

  9. Jess Says:

I like the duct tape wallet, but I really am scared of the pink one. Then again, I’m scared of stuff that says “it’s pink so it’s tech for girls!”

Then again, my boyfriend owns a pink phone and wants a pink laptop for the sheer silliness. I don’t claim to understand any of it.
