Small Bites of Social Media #2

This is the second “small bites of social media” post. In this series of articles, I highlight the best content I’ve found (according to myself!) on the Internet using social media websites such as digg, reddit, stumble upon, mixx and others.

Enjoy!

Uncyclopedia

Uncyclopedia logo

I guess that everybody who read this website know what Wikipedia is right? I must admit that I use it a lot. To find information for work, to find ideas for this blog, to end a long discussion with a friend about a stupid and worthless subject (like who’s the best, ninjas or pirates?).

Anyway, it’s a fantastic and infinite source of information! But did you know Uncyclopedia? It’s like Wikipedia, but with false articles and information… So it’s almost the same thing as Wikipedia, but the fake articles are deliberately fake!

Check out this article about pie chart. And this one about Al Capone! Nothing serious can be found there!

Perspective Art

Julian Beever Art on Sidewalk

I’ve seen a lot of these lately. You know, painting on walls and floors that looks like real 3D objects? Julian Beever is a famous artist that paint such things, mostly on sidewalks.

Here are some other perspective art found in a subway station in Toronto.

Brian Dettmer

We learn new things each day! I didn’t know Brian Dettmer, but he looks like a great artist. You know those old cassette tapes? Well, now these are really dead!

You can learn more about Brian Dettmer on his flickr stream.

The Swear Jar Commercial

Depending on what you plan to do with the money from a swear jar, it could or could not be a good idea to have one.

Am I Connected to the Internet?

Did you ever wondered if you were still connected to the Internet? No? Me neither. But still, there is this website that tells you if you are or not:

http://amiconnectedtotheinternet.com/
It doesn’t seems to work correctly tough. It looks like I’m connected and it tells me “NO”. Mmmm… Wait a minute!

Thanks to 4channer on stumble upon for finding those great links! :)

5 Poor Musicians

Elvis the King

A nice article about 5 musicians who overcame poverty to become superstars. Some of the musicians are :

  • Coolio
  • Jimi Hendrix
  • Ringo Starr
  • Johnny Cash
  • Elvis Presley

But I won’t tell you the others, you’ll have to… wait a minute! Damn! Seriously, in this post you’ll learn that Elvis’ father (yes, the King’s father!) was sent to prison for a fake 8$ check! That the only cash that Johnny had was in his last name and more interesting facts like that!

Weird Aquariums

Even if fishes aren’t the smartest animal you can have, why couldn’t they live in a great house too? My favorite one in this list is the labyrinth aquarium! It’s a really imaginative fish tank! But do not mistake it for a hamster cage… hamsters doesn’t like water. I learned that they drown most of the time in it.

Google and XKCD

XKCD comic

I’ve seen this xkcd comic on digg the other day and I though that it was funny and somewhat clever. Well guess what, it looks like Google did it! They added a “Audio preview” button under the comment box. I was skeptical after reading Matt Cutts’ article, but they really did it! People at Google have a really great sense of humor!

The cassette tape skeleton looks pretty sweet. I’m also glad that Google/Youtube reads XKCD (if the Youtube feature really originated from that comic). And you’re right, “Am I connected to the Internet” doesn’t work. Looks more like of a joke site, really.

First off, I love the header picture. The perspective art is awesome… and so is Toronto. I look forward to going there again.

I visited the birthplace of Elvis a few years ago. It is amazing that someone could come from a place so small, and become a legend like he is now.

The Youtube audio preview is pretty funny. Maybe there will be less rude remarks on people’s videos if something announces their foul comment at them. One could hope at least. :)
